2009 Goals

“There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them.”  Denis Waitley said that and it may mean more right now than at any other moment in our lifetime. There’s no doubt about it… Things are tough for some people right now, and they may be getting even tougher.

Boxing Day Beach Walk – 6.30pm

Adrienne, Mixologist| December 24, 2008 5:04 pm

Celebrate being single over the holidays and join us for a stroll along Tahuna Beach before heading over the road to 623 On The Rocks for two-for-one coffees & cocktails (special for Duck Soup).  Join us for either the walk (6.30pm), or the bar (7.30pm or so), or both depending on your schedule.

Meet at the Abel Tasman statue at the Tahunanui Beach carpark closest to Rocks Road.  We’ll wait for a few minutes after 6.30pm – otherwise try to catch up and we’ll turn around eventually!

There is NO SURCHARGE at 623 On The Rocks on Boxing Day so you might consider having dinner too – here is a link to their summer menu.

I’ve had lots of people calling and emailing for info about the beach walk – including a few out-of-towners in Nelson for the Christmas break.  So bring along your unattached relatives from out of town if they are here as well – or phone a single friend you know is up for a night out.

If you’d like to register your intention to come along (no obligation) – please fill in the following form:

Do opposite-sex friendships work in dating?

Adrienne, Mixologist| 12:07 pm

From a Christian Perspective: By Anthony Buono

I was speaking recently at a Theology on Tap and the subject of friendship with the opposite sex while dating came up. This is an important subject that often gets downplayed. In general, I’m opposed to opposite-sex friendships while dating someone (or when married, for that matter). There is a danger here that must not be overlooked. And I hope people will not conclude that I am opposed to opposite-sex friendship across the board, because I am far from it. Let’s focus on what is a possible danger with these relationships specifically related to dating and marriage.

Friendship has to do with intimacy with another person. This intimacy has to do with two hearts that grow close to one another. A couple dating and a married couple naturally develop intimacy, thus close friendship. That is a very good thing, and should always be maintained. In fact, it should never stop growing, and should always desire to go deeper.

Upcoming Events

Adrienne, Mixologist| November 30, 2008 11:51 pm

MONTHLY MINGLE:
In December our Duck Soup Networking night falls on Sunday 7 December – 7.30pm at the House of Ales (top of Trafalgar Street/bottom of Cathedral steps). We expect a full house again (over 160 unattached people on average) and lots of new faces just finding out about Duck Soup. Please don’t be shy and don’t fret about coming alone – we will meet you at the door and EVERYONE is very friendly.

GET OUT & GROOVE: (These events are more intimate in numbers attending and allow for friendships to develop in a less crowded environment whilst enjoying some type of activity.)

We are meeting for another Duck Soup Movie Night on Tuesday 9 December to see the James Bond movie “Quantum Of Solace” starring Daniel Craig. More info: http://statecinema.co.nz/movie.php?mid=2744  Buy your ticket beforehand for the 8.30pm showing. Group in the foyer 15-20 minutes before movie time and we’ll have coffee in the pizzeria or somewhere nearby afterwards.

Duck Soup Richmond Drinks is for those people living in the Tasman region! Come along to Sundial Square for Christmas Carols from 6.30pm-8.00pm and then we’ll head into The Stables on Thursday 18 December. You could also pop over to the Mall for your late night shopping. Of course you’re welcome if you live in Nelson – however, this is a great opportunity to meet a new social group in YOUR town, Richmond singles!

Our Duck Soup Beach Walk is at 6.30pm on Boxing Day Friday 26 December this month with a brisk and motivated walk on Tahunanui Beach after all that Christmas feasting. Meet at the Abel Tasman statue in the Rock Road carpark and go at your own pace – walk cancelled if raining.  Please feel free to bring along your kids (if they can keep up!) and friends/family members if you have them staying with you for the holiday – or use this walk as an excuse to get away from them for a couple of hours! Two for one coffees/cocktails at 623 on the Rocks afterwards.

Every Tuesday night at 7.30pm sharp is Quiz Night at the House of Ales and we will enter a Duck Soup team when we can (never yet to victory – but there is always a chance!). If you have been in a pub quiz team before – or know lots of trivial things – call Adrienne (544-2088) to book your seat on the team for this week – cost $2! You are welcome to become a regular – or just sit in now and then when you feel like it. (NOTE: no quiz 6 Jan during JazzFest08)

Letter to the Editor

Adrienne, Mixologist| November 29, 2008 10:23 pm

I was really touched to read the following letter to the editor in our Nelson Mail newspaper this evening. Thanks for your wonderful comments Debbie – I truely appreciate the public thanks as I receive no profit whatsoever from working on Duck Soup.  You really ‘get’ the Duck Soup concept and I’m delighted with all the recent feedback that people are spreading the word throughout Nelson!

Fun for singles

Sir, I am writing to congratulate the women who started the fabulous Duck Soup monthly event for singles. It’s been going for five months and keeps getting better and better as they think of ways to get us mingling.  It is so refreshing to go to an event where you know that everyone else is also single, and everyone is friendly, relaxed and open.  The first time is always the scariest but when you meet others who are feeling the same as you, you both laugh and get on with it.  You may not meet a partner straight away but you may make some new friends, as in the two guys that connected and have gone hunting together. We all have the same desires – friendship, meaning in life and to be happy.

I was also very surprised to see so many faces that I didn’t know – yes, girls, there are nice single men out there.  And let’s loosen up – it’s not meant to be serious.  Well done, organisers.  First Sunday of every month, 7.30pm at the House of Ales, www.ducksoup.co.nz.
